Description

This certification validates technical competence, practical operational mastery, and hot work safety in oxy-fuel gas cutting, heating, and oxy-acetylene welding operations. Recipients demonstrate applied expertise in compressed gas cylinder transport and storage, two-stage pressure regulator calibration, flashback arrestor and check valve verification, torch tip selection, flame chemistry tuning (neutral, oxidizing, and carburizing flames), clean plate cutting/beveling, and emergency shut-off controls in strict compliance with OSHA, ASME Section IX, and PUWER 98 standards.

Skills

Cylinder Handling, Chaining & Pressure Storage Safety

Regulator Calibration & Working Pressure Delivery

Flashback Arrestor & Check Valve Inspection

Flame Balancing (Neutral, Oxidizing & Carburizing)

Thermal Plate Cutting, Piercing & Bevel Preparation

Hot Work Permitting, Fire Watch & OSHA Compliance

Earning Criteria

Participation

Complete the 2-day practical and theoretical training program covering oxy-fuel equipment mechanics, fuel gas properties (acetylene/LPG/oxygen), manifold systems, and workshop hot work safety protocols under PUWER 98 and OSHA.

Assignment

Demonstrate practical operational proficiency in torch assembly, leak-testing connections, lighting and tuning a neutral flame, executing clean linear plate cuts and weld bevels, and completing basic fusion/braze welds without slag buildup or backfire

Test

Pass the practical pre-start hot work safety inspection, verifying cylinder cart chaining, color-coded hose integrity, dual flashback arrestor function at regulators and torch bodies, fire extinguisher placement, and emergency cylinder valve shutdown sequence.
