Description

Substance use among older adults is a growing yet often overlooked concern in both behavioral health care and physical health care. This one-hour training will provide participants with an understanding of the unique factors that contribute to substance use in later life, including physical health changes, loss, social isolation, and medication interactions. The session will also address how stigma—both societal and internalized—impacts help-seeking behaviors and engagement in treatment. Participants will explore age-appropriate principles of care, including screening considerations, motivational approaches, and integrated support strategies that promote dignity and quality of life. Practical guidance will be provided to support a variety of behavioral, physical and allied health professionals in recognizing, assessing, and responding effectively to substance use among older adults through a compassionate, person-centered approach.
