Description

This course is led by geologists with deep industry and capital markets experience. It offers a comprehensive introduction to the intersection of corporate finance and mining, designed for individuals seeking to understand how financial principles apply to the exploration and mining sectors. Participants will gain practical exposure to cash flow modeling and learn to evaluate mining projects quantitatively using Net Present Value (NPV), culminating in the opportunity to present their own assessments. The course introduces attendees to the financial side of the exploration and mining industries. This includes an overview of capital markets, sell-side and buy-side, equity research, investment banking, and M&A. We will discuss the various financial firms that link capital with companies, such as brokerages, conventional banks, alternative banks, private equity, advisory firms and exempt market dealers; plus the numerous forms of financings they offer. Project valuation using various methods will be discussed, with emphasis on Net Present Value, Net Smelter Revenue, and cash-flow modelling.

Top takeaways:
-Understanding capital markets in the mining context: Participants will learn how capital markets operate, specifically within the mining and exploration industries. This includes the roles of sell-side and buy-side institutions, equity research, investment banking, and M&A activity.
-Navigating financial institutions and funding mechanisms: Attendees will learn how various financial entities (brokerages, banks, private equity firms, and advisory groups) provide capital
Project valuation techniques: The course emphasizes practical valuation methods such as Net Present Value (NPV), Net Smelter Revenue (NSR), and cash flow modeling.
-Building and interpreting financial models: Through hands-on exercises, learners will construct spreadsheet-based models to evaluate real-world mining projects.
-Presenting financial opinions and strategic insights: Participants will develop the ability to present their valuation findings and articulate informed opinions on project feasibility.
